Great Books Every Child Should Read

Classic books do what absolutely no modern educational program can. Trust me. Try watching a child’s mind come alive through the pages of a great book. Screens and quick “edu-games” might entertain for a moment, but classic stories (the ones that have stood the test of time) shape a child’s heart, vocabulary, and imagination in ways no modern program can.

For homeschooling families, reading classics together is more than just exposing kids to literature; it’s character formation and historical education all in one.

Here are the twelve timeless books on this year's BATTLE OF THE BOOKS LIST. Every single one deserves a permanent place on your homeschool shelf:

  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum – A delightful fantasy that reminds children that courage, love, and wisdom often come from within—and that home is still the place of greatest value.

  • Man of the Family by Ralph Moody – A stirring tale of grit, work ethic, and family devotion that shows young readers the meaning of responsibility and integrity.

  • Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson – A thrilling voyage of courage, loyalty, and moral choice, proving that bravery and greed lead to very different ends.

  • Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen – A modern classic on entrepreneurship and honesty, showing how hard work and curiosity combine to create opportunity.

  • A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court by Mark Twain – A sharp and funny look at progress, justice, and the hubris of modern man, inviting readers to think critically about technology and tradition.

  • The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig – A powerful story of survival, gratitude, and resilience under hardship, teaching young readers about history, faith, and endurance.

  • The Witches by Roald Dahl – Whimsical yet wise, this story warns against deceit and celebrates cleverness, bravery, and standing up for what’s right.

  • The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder – A true lesson in perseverance and family unity through the harshest challenges—simple living, strong faith, and daily courage.

  • Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White – A tender masterpiece of friendship, sacrifice, and the beauty of life’s small miracles.

  • Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes – Historical fiction at its finest, teaching patriotism, humility, and courage in the spirit of America’s founding era.

  • Helen Keller by Margaret Davidson – An inspiring biography of determination and faith that shows how a strong will and loving guidance can overcome incredible barriers.

  • White Indian Boy by Elijah Nicholas Wilson – A true adventure that celebrates cultural understanding, courage, and curiosity about the world beyond one’s home.

These stories invite children to enter worlds of courage, compassion, and moral clarity. When children grow up with the classics, they don't just learn to read; they learn how to live with purpose and heart.
